A staff member Rachel Coman of the Salisbury Museum briefly mention an interesting process of printing.
This how she described the method.
'The printing is really fun and easy to do. You can take any image and transfer onto almost any material. I have done it on thin sheets of wood.
An inkjet printer works well; not sure about laser printing.
I take a used A4 sheet of printer labels and take any remaining labels etc. off the sheet and load into the printer so it prints onto the shiny side.
Get the paper/card/other materials ready that you want to print onto. When I am experimenting, I tend to use cheap art paper from a pound shop or scrap paper.
As soon as you have printed, carefully take the sheet and place (ink side down) you only get one attempt to get right so recommend practice on cheap stuff first, if actual materials are expensive.
Smooth over the back of the sheet. You can use your hand or a small ink roller to ensure all the ink transfers.
Then lift the paper away and you have a print!
Although this sounds really obvious, when you print like this the image will be reversed so just something to bear in mind.'
I experimented further and used some old overhead slide material. This has a shiny side that is perfect. On the reverse side it is rough to the touch. This is the side you would print on for overhead slides. I used this side to print on and then, when dry, I placed on to a sheet of white paper. The result was a very pleasing super shiny print that can be touched without detriment. This reminded me of the Cibachrome or Ilfochrome prints only easier to handle. Amazing.
I did a print on a sheet of wood. The result showed a need to prepare the surface somehow so that the ink is not absorbed so much. This absorption drains the colours away and give fuzzy edges to everything. More work needed to perfect this.
The results are such that you need to see them for real. Computer copies just do not have the character or feel.
Please see if you can find time over the next 8 weeks to have a good trial of this idea. I think you will find it very worthwhile.
