The meeting of Spire U3A on June 12th in Harnham found all the doors and windows open and some members taking their coffee outside, as it was one of the hottest days so far this summer.
Spire has two new groups starting for the new season. One is meeting in Porton and will be a discussion group on art, where the members will talk about their own art, help each other and have an occasional talk by a visiting speaker. The second new group is all about growing vegetables. Advice will be given about types of compost, plants and seeds and even which vegetables can be grown by those who have no garden and maybe only a small patio or veranda where a container could stand.
The Archaeology group has an interesting programme in the coming months, one of which is a talk by one of the members of 'Time Team' namely Mark Corney. The group had a successful outing to Avebury at the end of May and pictures can be seen on the U3A Website.
The speaker at the meeting was Ann Orr from the National Legal Services and her talk was entitled 'Protecting You, Your Family and Your Property'. She had plenty advice on wills and the problems that can come if no will is made. Not something a lot of people want to think about but she pointed out that a properly worded will can save so many problems and tax, not only for ones partner but also for those who stand to inherit.
