Christmas will be with us soon and this is the last newsletter for this year.  The next one will be out for the January 8^th 2007 meeting. You will see we now have another list of new members so please make them feel welcome especially if they appear to be alone.  We will be having a new members meeting again early next year.

We had a rather crowded meeting for new members last month but we hope most questions were answered. It is hard to get round and see everyone at monthly coffee morning but if you have questions don’t hesitate to ask anyone on the committee.  The Christmas meeting is a good opportunity with plenty of time to chat over the buffet.The Seasons Greetings to Everyone.

NEWS FROM THE GROUPS

Digital Imaging for Beginners We are starting a new class in 2007 on January 5th at 10am.  The classes run for two hours every four weeks and usually take about six to cover the basics; we are hopefully user friendly so adjust to the needs of each group.  Classes are held in Harnham. Archaeology * November 28th   Film by Belinda and Jim Wade, ‘Archaeology in North Africa’ with commentary by Nick Griffith. January 30th Talk by David Ride, ‘Archaeology and Wild Life on Porton Down’. Anne Boutell hopes to have talks by Mark Corney in February and Nick Griffiths in April.  Any suggestions for March please?

Science and Technology * The meeting on November 27th at 10am is titled ‘Safe to Drink’ Steve Smith of Wessex Water will be the speaker. On January 29th Dr Ken Collins will be talking about Hammerhead Sharks. *Spire organises these meetings and members from the other Salisbury U3As are invited. There is no need to have your name down to attend.  Just turn up on the day, usually in the Memorial Hall, Harnham unless otherwise stated.

 

Spire U3A have now purchased a Digital Projector And Laptop Computer. This is now available for Group Leaders to use in their classes. Ring Peter Read on 01722 501218

 

Ever thought of being an Exam Invigilator? Exams are among the most important and stressful events in the life of any learner. That’s why it’s so important that they are conducted in the correct way. Invigilators are crucial to this process. Wyvern College is looking for more invigilators to help oversee exams. Invigilators need to have a strong sense of “fair play”, be reliable, punctual, flexible and able to relate to students. There is no upper age limit. It’s an occasional part-time job, but one that is crucial to the smooth running of exams. Wyvern College has exams in November, March, May and June. Beware it’s a SCAM The Trading Standards Office are making people aware of the following Scam. A card is posted through your door from a company called PDS (Parcel Delivery Service) suggesting that they were unable to deliver a parcel and that you need to contact them on 0906 6611911 (a premium rate number). DO NOT CALL THIS NUMBER, as this is a mail scam originating in Belize.  If you call the number and you start to hear a recorded message, you will already have been billed £15 for the phone call.  If you do receive a card with these details, then please contact Royal Mail Fraud on 0207 239 6655 or your local Trading Standards Office. This is a genuine scam and is under investigation.

 

We need your help to keep SpireU3A fresh and vibrant. There will be vacancies on the committee at the AGM on April 16th 2007. Meetings, often held after a coffee morning, do not occur too frequently. The most any one is asked to serve is three years and you have the chance to bring new ideas into what is, after all your own club.  Do join us and talk to a committee member as soon as possible.
